280L Midea Heat Pump Hot Water Upgrade In Doreen
As a family grows, daily hot-water demand often increases, making an undersized or older system less practical to run. In this Doreen, VIC project, Green Electric Solutions upgraded an existing 135L natural-gas storage hot water system to a 280L Midea heat pump hot water system, providing more storage capacity with a more energy-efficient heating method.
The old gas system used approximately 30 MJ/h (8.33 kWh/h) of gas energy while firing, whereas the new Midea heat pump has a rated COP of 4.6. At rated conditions, it can provide approximately 2.5 kW of heating output using around 0.54 kW of electrical input. This upgrade demonstrates how selecting the right system capacity and technology can better match a growing household’s hot-water needs while reducing the energy required to produce hot water.
From 135L Gas To 280L Electric Heat Pump Upgrade
This single-story, four-plus-bedroom home needed greater hot-water capacity to meet the household’s growing needs. Instead of replacing the existing gas storage heater, Green Electric Solutions upgraded the property to a 280L Midea heat pump hot water system, providing increased storage capacity while removing the gas hot-water appliance from service.
The system uses R290 refrigerant and is designed for external installation. The heat-pump assembly is positioned above the storage tank, allowing the system to extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer that heat into the stored water.

How the 280L Heat Pump Was Electrically Connected
The electrical installation involved connecting the new 280L heat pump to the property’s existing electrical supply. The power cable routed neatly along the external wall, with the heat pump connected through dedicated switching and protection at the switchboard.
An external isolation point was also provided, allowing the system to be safely isolated for servicing and maintenance. The completed electrical work provides a secure and organised connection between the heat pump and the home’s electrical system.
